Breach Progression Observation in Rockfill Dam Models Using Photogrammetry

Dam failures are examples of man-made disasters that have stimulated investigation into the processes related to failure different dam types. Embankment breaching during an overtopping event is one major modes for this type, comprising both earthfill and rockfill dams. This paper presents results a series laboratory tests on breach initiation progression in Especially eight 1 m-high 1:10 scale embankment dams constructed scaled well-graded were conducted. Tests performed with without impervious core under inflow discharges. Controlling instrumentation includes up nine video cameras used image analysis photogrammetry. A previously little-used technique dynamic 3D photogrammetry has been applied prepare models every 5 s throughout process, allowing us track detail development. One important purpose research test methods observing rapidly changing morphology such as can easily be large-scale prototype-scale tests.
